During 17 days of August 2004, athletes from nearly 200 countries will compete in 28 sports in 296 events. About 11,000 men and women, accompanied by 5,000 trainers, physiotherapists and team leaders etc. will take part in the Games.

A number of International Athletic Federations representing sports such as squash, karate, technical swimming, billiards and bowling have also presented their candidature to be included in the 2004 Games Programme.

This year's Championships are being held in a temporary pool purchased especially for the event and located in the Valencia 'Luis Puig' Cycling Veledrome.

The 112th Session of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will be held in Moscow from 13 to 16 July 2001. During this Session, the IOC will take two landmark votes: to elect the host city of the Games of the XXIX Olympiad in 2008 on 13 July and to elect a new IOC President on 16 July. The second and final phase of the media accreditation process has begun. Accreditations must be received by the IOC no later than 30 April 2001.
The Japan Amateur Swimming Federation and the Organising Committee for the 9th FINA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS in Fukuoka, Japan in 2001 have prepared the first Information Bulletin, which contains useful information for all the National Federations about the organisation and participation in this event
